Keshet’s New Special Olympics Swim Team Makes Waves

Keshet’s commitment to fitness, skill-building and teamwork has expanded into the pool with the launch of our Special Olympics swimming program. Under the guidance of experienced coaches and certified lifeguards, a group of dedicated athletes is training weekly, gaining confidence, improving technique and most importantly—having fun.

The team, made up of six athletes, is focusing on strokes like freestyle, backstroke and even butterfly. Many started with limited swimming experience, but through individualized coaching, lane assignments based on ability and a supportive environment, they are making steady progress.

“The goal isn’t medals—it’s about the athletes showing up with a smile and leaving with a smile,” says Scott Harris, Keshet’s Recreation Sports Manager. While competition is part of the journey, the emphasis remains on personal growth. Most of the team is preparing for the 25-meter race, swimming from one end of the pool to the other, while one athlete is training for the 100-meter event.

Each practice is a workout, pushing the swimmers to build endurance and technique. By the end of each session, they’re extremely tired but proud. Parents have noticed the difference too, reporting newfound confidence in the water and improvements in swimming form. Every athlete has made progress—whether it’s moving their arms more efficiently, picking up speed or simply feeling more comfortable in the water.

Beyond skill development, the team dynamic has been just as impactful. The athletes are forming friendships, supporting one another and building a sense of camaraderie in and out of the pool. Each of the coaches and lifeguards create a welcoming, encouraging atmosphere and a dedicated cheering section of parents adds to the energy.

The team is preparing for its first Special Olympics qualifier at Lake Forest College on March 29, with hopes of advancing to the state tournament. But no matter the outcome, this program has already been a success in the ways that matter most. Keshet is excited to continue growing the program and welcoming even more athletes to take the plunge in the future.

Although the swimming season is wrapping up, Keshet’s Special Olympics track & field and golf programs are gearing up to start soon. To dive into the action, visit keshet.org/sports and be part of the fun!
