First Friends FAQ

A few years ago, while on a trip to Israel, Jennifer Phillips, Keshet’s CEO & President, saw firsthand the power of Shalva’s Me & My Mommy. Keshet partnered with Shalva to be the first provider outside of Israel to use their highly regarded model.

First Friends is core to Keshet’s mission to create a community of belonging, even for the youngest in our community. For decades, we have heard from parents of kids with disabilities that they wish they would have found “their community” when their babies were little and they felt so alone. Our goal is to change this so that parents can connect with others who understand firsthand their parenting journey in a welcoming, supportive Jewish community.

First Friends is designed for families of infants ages 3 to 18 months who have disabilities or complex medical needs. We don’t require a formal diagnosis; the program is open to babies who may have developmental delays, medical complexities or need extra support as they grow and develop. Some of the babies in the program have spent extended time in the NICU, use medical equipment, have physical differences or low muscle tone.

It’s also for parents who want to bond with their baby in a safe, supportive and joyful environment. Whether you’re looking to connect with others who truly understand your journey, introduce your baby to new experiences or simply find a welcoming community, First Friends is here for you.

First Friends is part play group and part support group — not a therapy or early intervention program. It’s designed to complement, not replace, any therapies or services a family may already be receiving. While many of our sessions are led by experienced therapists and educators, the focus is on building connection between parent and baby, and creating a warm, supportive community for parents and caregivers.

Each session begins with a welcoming song and a quick group check-in. We then enjoy a variety of activities led by different specialists, such as music therapy, Gymboree-style play, baby massage, a social worker’s visit and other special guests. We wrap up with a goodbye routine and a brief connection to that week’s events on the Jewish calendar.

During the main activities, parents and babies have the opportunity to play together one-on-one or participate as part of the group.

Similar to all of Keshet’s programs, First Friends is open to everyone who can benefit.

As a group, we will mark moments on the Jewish calendar, including holidays, with music and stories. We will also share ways of bringing Jewish traditions into your home and make them come to life for your little one.

Initial funding to create and plan for First Friends came from Jewish United Fund. First friends is also part of jBaby Chicago.
