Constructing Community: Volunteering with Habitat

For many summers, Avodah, Keshet’s vocational program at JCC Camp Chi, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Wisconsin River Area. Avodah team members volunteer at construction sites, Habitat ReStore and special events. It is a warm, welcoming community that has inspired an interest in construction and giving back among the Avodah team members.

Two Avodah participants, Cathy and Justin, took on the role of journalists to write about their experiences with Habitat this summer.

Habitat for Humanity is a place where people go to volunteer. I helped take down a ramp. Plus, I helped build corn hole boards. I liked that I was a helper. Other people would love working at Habitat for Humanity. Volunteering is important because it helps people prepare for a big job. I would love to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity again.

Habitat for Humanity is fun because you do new stuff each day you go there and to the warehouse on Friday. At the warehouse, I build corn tossers out of wood and you build it yourself. We use tools like drills and nails. The drill has a light on it when it drills.

The other people at Habitat for Humanity are nice. At Habitat, I like building new things. I get to try new things when I volunteer and help people build homes for people who need homes.
