The Importance of 1:1 Support

The support for adults with disabilities in our community has significantly evolved over the years and highlighted the importance of personalized support. At Keshet’s adult day program, GADOL, our goal is to provide support and create opportunities in the community for our individuals, or as we like to call them, team members! In our day program, one crucial element is the incorporation of one-on-one (1:1) support. Not only does this system strengthen the daily participation of the team members but also reinforces their overall growth and well-being. With DSP Recognition Week coming up (September 8-14), I’ve been taking the time to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had as a Direct Service Professional, particularly when it comes to 1:1 support.

What is 1:1 Support?

The term “one-on-one support” refers to the personalized attention and assistance provided by a staff member or Direct Service Professional (DSP) to a single participant. At GADOL, all team members receive support that takes into account their specific needs, preferences and goals. While some team members thrive in group interactions, which offer opportunities for socialization and collaborative learning, others require the more focused approach of 1:1 support to fully meet their unique needs.

Why is 1:1 Support Important?

All of Keshet’s team members possess unique challenges and capabilities, and 1:1 support allows staff to create customized plans that consider each individual’s personal goals, interests and learning styles. This personalized approach leads to greater engagement and motivation, especially when the goal is to develop independence in specific areas. For instance, some team members work on improving their ability to eat independently. With the focused attention provided through 1:1 support, they can learn to use adaptive tools like special plates and utensils, making significant strides toward self-sufficiency with daily living skills.

Communication is another area where 1:1 support may be crucial. Many team members have unique communication styles, and some may use communication devices to express themselves. Staff work closely with these individuals to ensure they become comfortable and proficient with their devices or other communication methods, enabling them to better articulate their needs, preferences and thoughts. This tailored support helps to enhance their communication skills, leading to greater confidence and more meaningful interactions with others.

The foundation of effective 1:1 support is also built on trust and understanding. Personalized attention enables our DSPs to develop deeper relationships with participants, allowing for a better understanding of their preferences, dislikes and triggers. These strong relationships contribute to a more positive environment and significant improvements in areas such as behavior, social interaction and the achievement of personal goals. Our team members are like family to us, and they deserve that family treatment and support.

Challenges of 1:1 Support

The goal of 1:1 support may be clear, but actually using the system comes with challenges. Disability services nationwide faces staff shortages, funding shortfalls and the constant need for training to ensure staff are well-equipped to provide personalized support. Additionally, balancing group activities and individualized attention is so important, allowing people to work on their social skills while ensuring their needs are met.

Learning from the Best

When I first started at GADOL, I was inspired by three exceptional DSPs—Danesha Hicks, Jordan Spiwak and Keith Johnson—whose dedication and compassion set a high standard with the team members they work 1:1 with. Each of them showed me the importance of connecting deeply with the team members, understanding their unique needs and providing consistent, personalized support. They were incredible models and resources for me when I began working 1:1.

It is so awesome to see the multiple obstacles overcome obstacles so easily. I am so proud of the goals I got to witness them accomplish. Working at Keshet has been an eye-opening experience. I love the community I have become part of. I love that I have built relationships with all of the team members and staff. It makes the job even better. GADOL is literally one big family. They all mean the world to me.

Our world isn’t “one size fits all,” and the 1:1 support we provide at GADOL reflects this principle. The positive outcomes associated with this model—such as enhanced skills, greater independence and stronger relationships—underscore the necessity of individualized attention for participants of all abilities. As we continue to advocate for personalized support, our program thrives with the dedicated efforts of our ever-growing team of 1:1 staff and DSPs, who make a difference every day.
